RAW Notes is a collection of thoughts from our Founder, Sugi. Here, Sugi shares with us his personal perspectives on Angles Watches.
No matter which angle you look at it from, Angles Watches always manages to offer something interesting, intriguing, and, at times, eyebrow-raising.
My journey with the brand began in 2017, when I first encountered the original partners behind Angles. Back then, it was an OEM company breaking into the watch market with innovative display complications like wandering hours and satellite hour displays - features previously unheard of. Fast-forward to today, and Angles has transformed into two distinct brands under separate ownerships. Yes, the original partnership dissolved, but what’s fascinating is how both brands continue to explore a similar genre while adopting vastly different pricing strategies and production volume (Angles does really small batches and no repeat)
My most recent meeting with Angles’ founder only deepened my respect for him. As he walked me through a book filled with his own hand-drawn sketches of concepts, ideas, and complications, it became evident: this is someone who lives and breathes watchmaking.
Of course, Angles hasn’t been without its controversies. From its resemblance to major watchmakers with its homage designs to dissatisfaction voiced by some prospective OEM clients in the past, the brand has faced its share of criticism. But to me, Angles is more than a homage maker - it’s an artist with a rebellious heart. It dares to introduce complications that were once seen as unattainable below the $70,000–$100,000 range and delivers them at just 1% of that price. The disparity is so dramatic that it begs the question: is the joke on Angles, or on the other brands?
Despite the challenges - such as dealing with scrapped projects from OEM clients after significant investments of time and resources - Angles has forged its own path. Instead of shelving those ideas, the brand chose to produce the watches themselves, even if some viewed this as crossing a line.
At the end of the day, Angles Watches remains a brand that keeps me intrigued. No matter which angle you look at it from, it’s a story worth watching.
