With the Corniche Heritage Chronograph, things are complicated in the best of ways thanks to the addition of their first-ever complication: Seiko’s renowned VK64 Hybrid Movement. And as looks matter too, you’ll find a stunning white dial and a perfectly sized 39mm case that together equal its intricate interior.
Inspired by the early days of racing, the new Heritage Chronograph is powered by an impressive engine of its own. In fact, the renowned VK64 Meca Quartz from Seiko is a so-called “hybrid movement” combining quartz technology with mechanical movements to form an engine that balances the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Whilst the timekeeping mechanism is essentially quartz, you’ll notice the “meca” part of the equation come into play every time you reset the chronograph. With components taken directly from Seiko's own in-house mechanical chronographs, the chronograph hands are disengaged from the quartz motor and are snapped back to zero, meaning you don't get that sweep back to zero that is representative for standard quartz chronos. Rather, you get a timepiece that combines the accuracy of quartz with the distinct look and feel of a mechanical chronograph. The central chronograph hands tick five times per second, just like movements of old.

A true testament to the power of a mechanical timepiece, the red pulsometer function can accurately capture a heart rate in under one minute. Simply locate the pulse, start the chronograph, and stop it after 30 heartbeats. The number displayed on the scale is the heart rate.The telemeter relies on a visible and audible event to calculate distance. Most commonly used for storm tracking, by starting the seconds hand when a visual signal such as lightning is observed and stopping it when thunder is heard, the distance between the wearer and the storm is displayed on the telemeter.Equally essential, the tachymeter scale measures velocity over a set distance. For example, in an automobile race, if the chronograph is initiated at a set point and stopped when the vehicle has travelled one kilometer or mile, the number indicated is the average speed for this segment of the race or speed trial.

The added functionality of the decompression timer is based on pioneering Swiss research of the 1950s and 60s and clearly displays when decompression stops are needed. Optimised for diving at 0-700 meters above sea level, the coordinating black unidirectional bezel can be used to precisely time dive duration. The vertical scale on the dial at 12 o‘clock corresponds to the dive depth while the white markings on the rings clearly indicate whether decompression stops are necessary. Weighing in at only 136g, the strength and durability of the Delma Shell Star Titanium are elevated, thanks to titanium’s natural tenacity and corrosion resistance. Coupled with compact proportions for a divers’ watch at 41mm in diameter and just 13.6mm thick, it is exceptionally comfortable and enjoyable to wear. In order to reduce the size significantly, but remain undeniably a Shell Star, each feature was carefully analysed and reconfigured for design and clarity.
Two types of lume - bright blue glowing SuperLumiNova BGW9 to accentuate the bezel, and neon green glowing SuperLumiNova C3 for the indexes and hands - were chosen for outstanding legibility. The Shell Star’s signature spade seconds hand is streamlined to draw attention to the subtly enlarged luminous pointer.
The black scratch resistant ceramic bezel brings an additional element of durability and creates a dramatic visual effect in combination with the sand textured dials. The colours of the signature railway track, date window and accents were purposefully considered for each variation of the well-appointed model. Despite the smaller proportions, the Delma Shell Star Titanium upholds the power of the Shell Star inside and out.
