Description
The Angles Cylindrex Silver Cobalt challenges one of the most familiar conventions in watchmaking: that time should be displayed on a flat dial.
Instead, the Cylindrex presents time across two distinct displays - a cylindrical display running along the body of the watch and a second display positioned at the end of the case. More unusual still, each is independently powered by its own automatic mechanical movement. Finished in stainless steel with vivid blue dials and orange accents, the Silver Cobalt turns an unconventional mechanical concept into one of Angles' most distinctive designs.
Inspiration & Design
The Cylindrex originated from a design challenge by Japanese movement manufacturer Miyota, centred on the reintroduction of its 6T movement series. Angles' response was not simply to build a watch around the Miyota 6T15, but to use the movement twice.
That decision defines the entire architecture of the Cylindrex.
Rather than presenting time conventionally from a single dial, two Miyota 6T15 movements independently drive two displays positioned on different planes. The cylindrical display makes the watch readable across the top of the case, while the end-cap display offers another perspective on time.
The Silver Cobalt brings additional energy to the concept with saturated blue dials and contrasting orange details, giving an already unconventional watch an unmistakable visual identity.
Dial & Case
The Cylindrex Silver Cobalt features blue dials complemented by orange-anodised aluminium hands on the cylindrical display. A BGW9 white luminous marker at the tip provides a point of visibility in low-light conditions.
Its unusual display architecture is housed within a 40mm-wide stainless-steel case measuring 13mm high. Separate sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating protect both time displays, preserving visibility across the watch's unconventional geometry.
Two push-pull crowns correspond with its dual-movement construction, while drilled screw-down lugs provide a secure connection for the strap.
Turn the watch over and a sapphire exhibition caseback reveals the mechanics within, including Angles' distinctive turbofan-style rotor.
Water resistance is rated to 3ATM.
Movement
The defining mechanical feature of the Cylindrex is not one automatic calibre, but two.
Angles uses a pair of Miyota 6T15 automatic movements to independently power the watch's two time displays. Each operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and uses 21 jewels.
The cylindrical time display offers approximately 36 hours of power reserve, while the end-cap display provides approximately 40 hours. Angles states accuracy at ±30 seconds per day.
Using two mechanical movements where a simpler solution might have sufficed is precisely what gives the Cylindrex its character. The unusual exterior isn't disguising conventional mechanics underneath - the architecture of the watch is intrinsically tied to the way it works.
Bracelet / Strap
The Silver Cobalt is fitted with a 24mm silicone strap that tapers to 20mm at the clasp.
A solid 316L stainless-steel butterfly clasp complements the case and provides a clean, integrated closure, while the silicone construction suits the Cylindrex's contemporary, industrial character.
Final Thoughts
There are unconventional watches, and then there are watches that reconsider the basic architecture of how a wristwatch should work. The Cylindrex belongs firmly in the latter category.
Its sideways cylindrical display immediately catches the eye, but the more interesting story is underneath: two automatic movements independently powering two displays within a single watch. It is an extravagant mechanical solution to a problem that didn't necessarily need solving - and that is precisely part of its appeal.
The Silver Cobalt adds enough colour to emphasise the Cylindrex's futuristic personality without overwhelming the mechanics, making this a particularly expressive interpretation of one of ANGLES' most original designs.
